Broderick and Elwes are the idealistic young Bostonians who lead the regiment; Freeman is the inspirational sergeant who unites the troops; and Denzel Washington is the runaway slave who embodies the indomitable spirit of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts. Notes Black soldiers, in fact, had a difficult time enlisting in the Northern army, which at first did not welcome them; when the Unionists finally changed their mind, African-Americans often responded to the earlier slight by refusing to join up. Of the 186,107 black soldiers in the Union army, 37,300 died; many of them were front-line men in the most dangerous positions. 75 years later, during World War II, many blacks still fought in segregated regiments. Edward Zwick, the director of "Glory", was co-creator of television's "Thirtysomething." Description A privileged young Boston Brahmin, disillusioned by the savagery of the Civil War, is offered the command of the 54th Regiment, the first black fighting unit. The regiment soon discovers its first battle is to prove it can fight with skill and courage. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Art Direction. Academy Awards: 3, including Best Supporting Actor--Denzel Washington, Best Cinematography. Synopsis An epic drama that recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by history: the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their enslaved brothers. The film follows the youthful Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, responsible for readying these soldiers for battle; he finds the job harder than he expected, because many of the man balk at taking orders from him. One Private Trip is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding... and it is this Private who volunteers to carry his regiment's colors into battle -- a front-line position that means almost certain death. The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
